What is golf ??

Golf :

Golf  is a men's Olympic sport in which individual participants or teams try to drive a small ball by hitting clubs into special holes. Importantly, the ball needs to be rolled into the hole in fewer strokes.

History of the origin and development of golf :

The exact date of golf is not known, but it is believed that it was invented by Scottish shepherds who tried to roll stones into rabbit holes with their staffs. While many historians disagree, it is believed that golf originated in the Roman Empire and was played with bent sticks and a ball stuffed with feathers. According to other theories, golf appeared in China during the reign of the Ming dynasty, as evidenced by a scroll depicting an emperor who is trying to drive a ball into a hole with something like a club.

However, modern golf comes from Scotland. The first mention of the game is the 1457 decree of King James II of Scotland on the prohibition of golf, as it distracted archers from training. There were also invented rules and a system with 18 holes on the field.

Rules of golf (briefly) :

Here's what you need to do before you start the game:

1.Read the local rules of the game.
2.Put an identification mark on the ball. This is to ensure that you can identify your ball      among the others. If the ball cannot be identified, it is considered lost.
3.Check the number of clubs, it is allowed to have no more than 14 pieces.

The game of golf starts from the starting zone or as it is also called "tee" zones. It is so named because of the T-shaped stand on which the ball is placed. Ideally, the player should first hit the ball in the main zone, then in a few strokes to overcome it and send the ball to the area with the perfect grass ("green"). In order to roll the ball into the hole from the green, you need to use a special stick - a putter.

In addition to the standard rules, golf has rules of etiquette:

  • Avoid the game until the group in front has gone to a safe distance.
  • Never delay the game. Free the "putting green" as soon as all the players in your group have passed the hole.
  • Skip forward groups that play faster than you.
  • Restore the turf.
  • Level the tracks in the bunkers.
  • Don't get on the other partner's pattying line .
  • Don't put clubs on the putting green.
  • Insert the flag into place gently.

Golf course :

The golf course must meet a number of requirements, namely a series of holes, each of the holes must have its own launch pad. There are two labels on the launch pad that show the permissible boundaries of the zone to set the peg for the ball. In addition to the launch pad on the field are present: a smooth field, uneven field and other obstacles.

The final part of the site is the hole, which for the convenience of orientation is marked with a flag. The hole is placed on a site with a minimum height of grass, which is called "green." In other areas, the height of the grass fluctuates, this is done in order to make it difficult for players to pass the site. As a rule, the holes are located in the line of sight from the launch pad to the green. But this is not always the case, if the holes deviate left or right, then such holes are called "left doggle" and "right dogg" respectively. If the direction bends twice, the hole is called "double doggy." The pitches consist of 18 holes, but there are platforms with 9 holes, in this situation they pass twice, which is the same 18 holes.

Golf inventory and equipment :

Let's start reviewing golf inventory with sticks. The player can take no more than 14 clubs to the game, each of them is designed to perform a certain blow. Golf clubs are divided into two types:

  • "Wood" (woods) - clubs designed to perform blows at maximum distances, as a rule, such are the first blows. They are called "wood" because of the wooden head, although modern wood is made of titanium-based metal alloys.
  • "Iron" (iron) - clubs designed to perform blows at different distances, depending on the position of the ball. The clubs have this name because their head is made of metal.

In addition to the material, clubs vary in the shape of heads.  So for short-range strikes and with a high trajectory use sticks "pitching wedge" (wedge), the angle of inclination at such clubs is 50-60 degrees. If the blow needs to be made from a sand bunker, then the "sand wedge" stick will be suitable, it has a heavier sole and a special shape. For final strokes players use a club called "putter" (patter), it is designed specifically for blows on a flat surface with great accuracy. In the "wood" and "iron" groups, the sticks are numbered depending on the angle between the clutch and the front of the head. The smaller the number, the longer the potential trajectory of the impact. The difference in the length of putters of neighboring numbers is about 10 meters.

Another important piece of golf equipment is the balls. They should have the following characteristics:

  • with a diameter of at least 4.27 cm,
  • weight within 41-46 grams,
  • the surface of the ball should have 300-500 troughs (the more troughs, the higher the ball flies),

When considering golf balls, we should mention the indicator of "compression." In simple terms, compression is the level of ball deformation on impact. Its conditional value varies from 0 (the ball is strongly deformed on impact) to 200 (the ball does not deform on impact). Most balls have a compression of 80-100 (compressed by 2-3 mm on impact).

Under the internal device, balls can consist of one, two, three or more layers-components. Single-layered balls because of their low cost are ideal for training beginners.

Two-layer balls consist of a hard core and a thin hard shell. They combine low cost, durability and range, so are suitable for most golfers.

Three-layer balls have a winding of elastic thread on top of an elastic or gel-like core. Such balls can be very strongly twisted, sometimes it is very beneficial for athletes.

In four-layer balls there is an additional layer between the braid and the shell. The potential of such balls can be revealed only by professionals.

Golf tournaments :

Among the most prestigious and popular professional tournaments are:
  • Olim games. Golf was included in the program of the Olympic Games 2016, before that golf was at the Olympics only 2 times (1900, 1904).
  • The Masters Tournament is one of four major golf tournaments (similar to Grand Slam tennis).
  • The US Open is an annual U.S. Open.
  • The Open Championship is the oldest golf competition in the Major League Baseball Series.
  • The PGA Championship is an annual golf tournament hosted by the Professional Golfers Association of America.
