The Correct Golf Grip For Amateur Golfers That is Very Different to the Grip Used by Tour Pros :

Over the past hundred years, much has been written about the good grip of golf in golf instruction books. Virtually every golf instruction book contains a chapter on how to learn the right golf catch, and yet there are so many golfers who have handles that are far from correct.
In this article, I'll explain what it takes to develop a correct golf catch that will greatly improve the consistency of your golf shots, leading to more confidence in golf when you play and practice.

Golf Grip

Before we start though, I want to tell you about the golf lies that are spreading about golf's grip. You see, there are two distinct styles of golf grip; one is for the PGA touring golfer or the elite amateur golfer, and the other is for the average amateur or social golfer.

It is a lie to think that a high handicap amateur golfer should use the handle that a touring golfer uses. The reason is that touring golf swings are very developed to hit very precisely golf shots over long distances. The whole goal of a professional golf swing is to draw low golf scores consistently, so that their grip is finely suited to their individual swing style. It is rare to see a touring golfer with a poorly formed grip as they know how important the hands are to control both the face and head of the club during the golf swing.

Amateur golfers do not compete to win tournament prizes, so their goals are different from those of tour professionals. Most amateur golfers who attend my golf school just want to hit longer, straighter shots so they can play closer to their golf handicap. An amateur golfer has a handicap so that he can compete with other golfers with handicaps ranging from low to high. Pros and amateurs play the same game, but have very different goals and ways of doing things when everything is said and done.

The main difference between the professional and amateur socket is the way the hands are placed on the golf club compared to the face of the club. Golf handles in golf instruction manuals are often described as "strong," neutral and "weak," which mainly refers to the placement of the left hand on the handle and the number of visible hand joins. More visible joins means stronger grip and fewer visible joins means lower grip.

Personally, I think this way of describing the golf catch is incorrect. I prefer to think of golf-taking styles like the palm of the hand or the fingers of the hand. In my experience, too many amateurs have a more palm-of-the-hand grip style, which quite often leads to a sliced ball. You can't fix a cut shot or increase your driver's distance with a palm-style golf handle.

This style, however, suits touring players as it helps them reduce excessive hand and club movements, giving them more control over their ball theft, which is actually more important to them than hitting the golf ball further.

Amateur golfers need more hand movement to straighten golf shots and hit the ball further. The right take for amateur golfers who want to secure a slice, reduce the lateral rotation of their golf strokes and increase the distance of their irons and antlers is to adopt the style of the fingers.

This grip style does two things that almost all amateur golfers must do to play better.

  1. It increases the angle of the wrist cock in the back swing so you can increase the potential energy of your golf swing, leading to a faster club head in the swing down.

  2. It increases the rotation of the club face, making it easier to rotate the closed golf club across the impact zone, resulting in correction of sliced shooting patterns and excessive lateral rotation on all your shots.

The easiest way to learn the hand style fingers of the golf handle is to notice the difference when holding something with a handle diameter the size of a baseball bat, as opposed to something with a diameter the size of a golf handle. Instantly, you need to be aware of the difference between where you naturally hold the object. If it is a thick diameter, it will feel more comfortable in the palm of both hands.

An amateur golfer using hand-style fingers will greatly increase his rotation speed, both in terms of accelerating the club head in the low swing and rotating the club face before and after impact. This is the correct golf catch method for any golfer who wants to hit the ball further and straighter with much less effort.

A so-called "neutral take" for an amateur golfer is a typical golf lie. Beware of this advice as it won't solve slice problems, and in fact, it will probably make your slice worse for you. Place your golf club directly in the fingers of both hands until you feel it is held mainly there, and you will notice the difference when you swing the golf club and hit a few shots.

I guarantee you will play better, more often and with much more confidence in golf using the hand-style fingers of the golf handle. It's the right handful of golf for most amateur golfers, so try it today, you won't regret it.
